Accreditation is the process of evaluating and authorizing organizations conducting tests, analyses, inspections, and certifications for products or services to demonstrate their compliance with market conditions, national or international standards, regulations, and laws by an internationally accredited institution. Accreditation bodies must have signed the MLA (Multilateral Recognition Agreement) prepared by the IAF (International Accreditation Forum) to ensure the global validity of their services. If an accreditation body has not signed the MLA agreement, it may occasionally face issues with international recognition due to non-compliance with the principle of mutual recognition. However, this does not mean the accreditation is invalid. Being a member of one of the regional accreditation organizations that signed the MLA agreement (e.g., APAC, EA) implies indirect recognition by the IAF.

What is APAC?

APAC (Asia Pacific Accreditation Cooperation) is an accreditation commission, also known as Asia Pacific Accreditation Cooperation in Turkish. It is a member of the IAF and has signed the MLA (Mutual Recognition Agreement). Click here to view APAC membership published under IAF. Consequently, the certificates issued by EOS Certification are valid and recognized. The IAF Accreditation Forum collaborates with many other accreditation commissions like APAC. These include EA (European Accreditation), AFRAC (African Accreditation Cooperation), IAAC (Inter-American Accreditation Cooperation), and ARAC (Arab Accreditation Cooperation).

What is IAF?

The IAF (International Accreditation Forum) is an association of accreditation bodies and other organizations concerned with conformity assessment programs for management systems, products, services, personnel, and similar areas. It works to reduce risk for businesses and their customers by developing conformity assessment programs worldwide. The primary purpose of the IAF is to oversee accreditation body members to ensure they are performing their tasks without conflicts of interest. Its second goal is to establish Multilateral Recognition Agreements (MLAs), known as mutual recognition agreements, among its members to ensure accredited certificates are trusted globally, reducing risks for businesses and their customers. MLAs contribute to global trade freedom by eliminating technical barriers to trade. The IAF seeks to develop a unified system where a company’s accredited conformity assessment certificate is recognized anywhere in the world.

What is the MLA Agreement?

The MLA (Multilateral Recognition Agreement) is known as a mutual recognition agreement. It ensures the mutual recognition of accreditation bodies. All accreditation bodies and organizations that have signed the agreement automatically accept and recognize each other’s accreditations as valid. The purpose of the MLA is to encompass all accreditation bodies in all countries, thus eliminating the need for product or service providers to be certified in every country where their products or services are sold.
